Paul Mariner has told ESPN that Everton should move for Sporting Lisbon hitman Islam Slimani.

The 28-year-old has fired his way on to the radar of a number of English clubs after netting 27 times in 33 appearances in the Portuguse top flight last season.

Sporting's Islam Slimani controls the ball against Moreirense.

According to A Bola, Everton have lodged a bid for the Algerian marksman but West Bromwich Albion have gazumped them with a £21 million offer, say The Mail.

With a little over two weeks left in the transfer window, the clock is always ticking and the Toffees will need to act quickly if they want to submit an offer which matches Sporting's £26 million valuation of the hitman.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman applauds fans after the game

"For me, this is a no-brainer," he said to ESPN when asked if he'll join Everton.

"I don't know why he's not being linked with more top, top teams. He's a top goalscorer and scores goals for fun. I would love to see this guy in the Premier League."

Everton have only just signed Yannick Bolasie from Crystal Palace for £30 million, but what good is an excellent without an excellent striker in the box? Of course, they have Romelu Lukaku but it remains to be seen whether he will stay at Goodison Park.

The Toffees could and probably should aim to keep Lukaku and bring in another prolific goalscorer of Slimani's vintage.

Big things are planned at the Merseyside club it seems but it is hard to reach a new footing in English football if they bring in Slimani as Lukaku's replacement. Signing the latter whilst keeping the Belgian would improve the squad and it is the squad which achieves success - not first XIs.
