Two missed penalties and a hat-trick from Aguero. A scintillating performance by Sterling. A 5-0 win away from home. Unsurprisingly, Twitter was in its typical fine form throughout the match.
And though they qualified for the tournament once again, they were not guaranteed a place in the group stages.
Being drawn against Romania's most successful team, they had to beat Steaua Bucherest over two legs to qualify.
That qualification looks certain now after a 5-0 win away from home in the first leg.
City started well and could have been a goal up in the ninth minute when Raheem Sterling won a penalty.
However, talisman Sergio Aguero uncannily had his penalty saved.
Four minutes later City were in the lead. After Sterling chased down a loose ball, he quickly chopped inside before finding the onrushing David Silva.
Making no mistake, the Spaniard emphatically found the net.
It could have been 2-0 soon after when City were awarded a second penalty after Aleks Kolarov was tripped.
But to the disbelief of everybody, Aguero blazed the penalty over the bar.
He was back to his typical self as he made amends in the 41st minute finishing off a fine City move after Sterling's one lay off.
City started the second half as they finished the first and found themselves three up inside the 49th minute.
Finding himself on the end of a sublime Kevin De Bruyne through ball, Nolito took the ball around the keeper to open his City account.
City were playing some electrifying football and were rewarded with 12 minutes to go when Aguero grabbed his second after some intricate build up play with Nolito.
And Aguero truly made up for his earlier mistakes when he sealed his eighth City hat-trick in the 88th minute.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the comprehensive victory.
First of all, many were shocked by Aguero's double penalty miss.
Would you believe it, he's missed another one. What are the odds of that? The green laser pointer probably didn't help. #MCFC— Nathan (@Bluemoon82) August 16, 2016
With usual star man Aguero off the boil in the first-half, it presented Sterling the opportunity to excel. And his performance did not go unnoticed.
Sterling has been brilliant. Different player #Mcfc— Dominic Marley (@DominicMarley) August 16, 2016
When Sterling is playing better than Aguero...I will absolutely take it #MCFC— VinnyMAG (@vinnyferdinando) August 16, 2016
Guardiola has now won his first two games in charge of City, and many praised their new style of play.
