Roberto Di Matteo has praised the Aston Villa fans for their support so far, labelling them as fantastic on the club’s official website.

The Villans have not had an ideal start to the season, losing their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday and an EFL Cup clash with Luton Town.

Villa returned to winning ways on Saturday though, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Rotherham at Villa Park in the Championship.

It was their first win in over six months, finally giving the Villa Park faithful something to celebrate after a dismal year for them.

Di Matteo has praised the Villa fans, saying that he felt a definite connection between them and the players during the win against Rotherham.

“Our fans really have been fantastic,” he told the club’s official website. “They really got behind the team and the team gave them something to cheer about.

"There was a real, definite connection there between the team and the supports and we want that to be stronger and strong each week.”

Di Matteo will now be hoping that his side can build on this first win and enjoy a successful season in the Championship.

Fans and pundits alike have largely written them off this summer, with some believing another relegation could be on the cards.

The win against Rotherham showed that they can do well on their day, though, and the Villa players will be hoping that they can give their fans more to cheer about as the season progresses.
