Speaking to Goals on Sunday, former Newcastle United defender Jonathan Woodgate has backed the Magpies to bounce back from their disappointing start to life in the Championship.

Rafa Benitez’s side are expected to dominate in the division this season, especially following their work in the transfer window this summer.

It has been a disastrous start for them so far though, with them suffering defeat to Fulham in the opening game of the season and then losing again to Huddersfield Town at St James Park on Saturday afternoon.

There is still a confidence they will find their feet though and Woodgate says he is backing them to secure promotion.

“The Championship is the hardest league without a doubt,” he told Goals on Sunday.

“Rafa Benitez, I’m sure, will get hold of them sooner rather than later. They’ve brought some good players in as well. I think they’ll still go up.”

It remains to be seen if Newcastle can bounce back from this poor start to secure promotion at the end of the campaign.

Things have not gone to plan to say the least, but they will know that the season is far from over after just two games.

Indeed, these defeats may actually prove to be a blessing in disguise, with it having been made clear to them that the Championship will not be easy in any regard.
