Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is confident that his side can have a positive season despite losing late on to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Black Cats fell behind early on to a Sergio Aguero penalty before Defoe's strike in the second half pegged one of the Premier League title favourites back.

It appeared the Black Cats were heading for a point only for a Paddy McNair own goal to settle the game in City's favour.

There were still plenty of positives to take from the game, the first competitive outing of the David Moyes era, which saw the side look organised and carry a goal threat.

Defoe told the Sunderland Echo: “I know how important my goals are and I’m sure the rest of the lads will chip in this year because we have some good players.

“The young lads coming through as well, looked really good. I really believe we will have a good year.”

What constitutes a good year? Well, Sunderland would like to have an easier time of things in the Premier League than they have had in recent seasons, so doing more than rallying to keep their head above water come the closing stages of the season would be welcome.

Defoe's goals are evidently going to be a big part of their season. He's a proven goalscorer at a very high level and if he gets a decent haul of at least 15, that's going to make a massive difference in the context of their campaign.

He also seems optimistic about the younger players around the squad, and combined with a couple of signings, they could offer some freshness and some depth to the squad for what is sure to be a challenging season, even though there have been some initial positive signs.
