Gary Neville has told Sky Sports that he believes that Arsene Wenger should remain as Arsenal manager.

The Gunners boss has come under increasing pressure again this summer due to his failure to spend big in the transfer window.

That pressure was ramped up on Sunday as he watched his side fall to a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in their opening game of the Premier League season.

The home crowd turned against their long serving manager during that defeat, with boos ringing around the Emirates Stadium.

There is once again debate whether Wenger should leave Arsenal, but Neville says he believes the Frenchman should remain.

“I am sure when Arsene Wenger is not here, there will be a massive amount of admirations for what he has achieved at this football club,” he told Sky Sports.

“I would advocate him staying on because it feels like we have new managers every 10 minutes and he is a stalwart. He is the most successful manager in their history.”

It now remains to be seen if this defeat will force Wenger’s hand and tempt him into spending big before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Arsenal squad does not need a complete overhaul by any means, but the loss to Liverpool showed that they do need additions in key areas.

To do that Wenger will need to bite the bullet and spend over the odds though, and it will be interesting to see if he is willing to do that.
