According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are edging closer to a £28m deal for Valencia centre back Shkodran Mustafi - but The Mirror claim that Valencia aren't negotiating a transfer with anybody.

The Gunners crumbled against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, as three second half goals handed Jurgen Klopp's men a 4-3 victory at the Emirates Stadium, meaning Arsene Wenger's men have opened the season with a home defeat.

The problem for Arsenal was a lack of proven options in defence. Laurent Koscielny is still being rested having played in the Euro 2016 final for France last month, whilst Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are both out injured, leaving the inexperienced Rob Holding and Calum Chambers at centre back.

Arsenal need a centre back before the transfer window slams shut, and top target appears to be Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi - but conflicting reports are emerging today over a possible move for the German.

Sky Sports claim that Arsenal are closing in on a £28m deal for Mustafi, with the defender's move to North London looking to be on the cards - however, The Mirror report that Valencia aren't negotiating his transfer, and Arsenal have yet to return with an improved bid as of this afternoon.

Arsene Wenger's recent reputation for dawdling in the transfer market isn't being aided by this saga, as Arsenal appear to be taking their time in making a move for Mustafi despite their defensive woes.

Mustafi, 24, featured for Germany at Euro 2016 and has been impressing for Valencia since joining the La Liga giants from Sampdoria back in the summer of 2014.

Quick and strong in the air, Mustafi can play at centre back or right back and has already spent time in English football, having been on the books at Everton in the early stages of his career.

Fans will want to see Mustafi signed soon, but it's unclear just how close Arsenal are to signing the defender - but after Sunday's performance, it's clear that Wenger must splash some cash on a new centre back by the end of the month.
