According to The Mirror, Middlesbrough are hoping to beat Newcastle to the signing of Everton teenager Brendan Galloway on a season-long loan deal.

Boro opened their return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, with new signing Alvaro Negredo making an immediate impact.

Negredo is just one of a handful of signings made by Boro boss Aitor Karanka this summer, but the Spaniard doesn't appear to be done just yet – and could target another full back even after snapping up Fabio from Cardiff City..

The Mirror report that Middlesbrough want to take Everton defender Brendan Galloway on loan for the season, and have matched an offer made by local rivals Newcastle United for the player.

Galloway, 20, is another product of the MK Dons youth ranks, much like Liverpool's Sheyi Ojo and Tottenham's Dele Alli, and emerged in the Premier League last season with 15 appearances to his name.

Primarily a left back but also capable of playing at centre back, Zimbabwe-born Galloway has a huge future ahead of him – but with three other left backs at Everton in Leighton Baines, Bryan Oviedo and Luke Garbutt, he may find playing time hard to come by this season.

The Mirror report that Newcastle and manager Rafael Benitez have been in talks with Everton about a season-long loan deal Galloway in recent weeks, but Middlesbrough have now matched their offer for the defender.

However, it's stated that Everton are unlikely to let Galloway join a Premier League rival, meaning Newcastle may still be leading the race for the youngster's signature – but do appear to face competition from their North East rivals.
