According to the Sheffield Star, Newcastle United have joined Derby County in the race to sign Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri.

Forestieri, 26, was a star for Wednesday last season having joined the club from Watford in the summer of 2015, hitting 15 goals in 39 games as Wednesday reached the Championship play-off final.

The Italian forward started this season in style with a winning goal against Aston Villa last weekend, but speculation now surrounds his future at Hillsborough.

As noted by the Sheffield Star, Derby County have failed with a bid of £7m for Forestieri, and another Championship rival have joined the race in Newcastle United.

The Magpies lost 2-1 at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon, meaning the pre-season title favourites have opened the season with two consecutive defeats – and even after a summer of spending, manager Rafael Benitez appears to want more firepower, and is therefore looking to land Forestieri.

Having landed attacking players such as Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle already this summer, fans will wonder whether Newcastle really need to spend big money - possibly more than £10m - on Forestieri, who is in something of a similar mould to Ayoze Perez.

Newcastle have mustered just six shots on target in their first two games of the season, and it's clear that they're lacking a creative spark and somebody capable of producing a moment of magic, which is just what Forestieri has provided for Wednesday.

Forestieri has shown that he can score from range and run at defenders, whilst he creates many chances for his team-mates, and his versatility to play wide or behind a striker makes him such a dangerous attacking player to have, which is something Perez could develop into if given time.

However, Newcastle may also need more of a focal point in attack with Aleksandar Mitrovic currently missing through suspension, with the aforementioned Gayle offering pace in behind rather than a physical presence, and no other Magpies striker offering similar attributes to the big Serbian hitman.

That's something Forestieri won't offer either, and whilst he can provide moments of magic, Benitez may be better served finding another centre forward before attempting to bring in a player like Forestieri, and could even look to develop 23-year-old Perez instead.
