Former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn has told TV Yorkshire that he found Alex Mowatt to be "outstanding" for most of the Whites' 2-1 home defeat by Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds slumped to back-to-back Championship defeats yesterday by following up their 3-0 reverse at QPR with another disappointing showing against Gary Rowett's side.

They fell behind on the 15-minute mark through Jacques Maghoma, but Garry Monk's troops rallied and Hadi Sacko - on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon - opened his account by levelling up on 27 minutes.

United could and perhaps should have went on to win it, but Michael Morrison's strike 10 minutes after the break was enough to consign Leeds to another defeat.

Monk's boys are already six points off the pace in the race for promotion, but Redfearn has salvaged one positive in the form of midfielder Mowatt, who was replaced Kalvin Phillips on 73 minutes.

"I think Sacko looked dangerous on the right. I think Alex Mowatt was outstanding for an hour; just his movement off the left and his link-up play behind the front," he said to TV Yorkshire.

Mowatt was a bit below his best last season on the whole, but the 21-year-old will be hoping to remind fans of his prodigious talent this time around.

Leeds now turn their attention to Tuesday when they welcome Fulham to Elland Road.

It is perhaps indicative of Massimo Cellino's ruthlessness in regards to wielding the axe on managers, but a defeat against the Cottagers and Monk - who has had two Championship games as Whites boss - might begin to feel the pressure.
