Aston Villa forward Rudy Gestede put in a magnificent performance as his side bounced back from a disappointing opening week to the season to crush Rotherham United 3-0 at Villa Park.
Boss Roberto Di Matteo certainly had his work cut out heading in to this weekend’s match, yet Villa bounced back with a huge helping hand from towering forward Gestede.
The former Blackburn Rovers man netted twice in the opening half before Jack Grealish sealed all three points late on, yet it was his overall display which really caught the eye.

As shown by the table provided by Opta, Gestede was heavily involved throughout and Rotherham simply had no answer to his presence and strength in the air as he dominated the aerial battle.
The Frenchman opened the scoring when he nodded in Aly Cissokho’s cross midway through the first half, and before the break he deftly chipped Lee Camp to make it 2-0 after being set up by Ross McCormack.
Gestede is widely regarded as one of the best forwards in England in terms of aerial strength, and he dsplayed his dominance by winning a whopping 15 aerial battles over the course of the encounter.
When the 27-year-old is in this sort of mood and receives the right kind of service, there are few defenders who can match up to him and it’s up to Di Matteo to consistently get the best out of him.
The win will be a welcome relief for most Villa fans, and now with increased expectations they will be expected to put in similar type of home performances for the rest of the campaign.
