Leeds United like little more than getting one over on their fierce rivals Manchester United – no matter what the situation.

Now, former Liverpool utility player Jason McAteer has handed Leeds one over their rivals with his comments on right-backs Gary Kelly and Gary Neville.

McAteer was speaking on Sky Sports Fantasy Football Club when the Irishman picked his best Irish XI.

Leeds hero Kelly was an obvious choice at right-back, but McAteer continued:

“I think Gary Kelly is one of the most under-rated right-backs the Premier League has ever seen. I think if you ask anyone to name a Premier League XI Gary Neville will probably get in it.

“But I think Gary Kelly was better than Gary Neville. People will smile at that. I just think Gary Neville had a lot of great players in front of him.

“But Gary Kelly had everything. He had pace, he always had Ryan Giggs in his pocket. Another fantastic character to have in the dressing room.”

Neville’s place as the number one right-back of the Premier League era is hardly ever challenged. If, however there was to be a claim to the throne there is little doubt that the Leeds legend would be one of those to do so.

Kelly was also a one-club man. He joined Leeds in 1991 from Home Farm in Ireland and spent an incredible 16 years with the club.

He played 531 times for Leeds and was a constant presence in the team until his retirement at the age of 32.

It is now nearly ten years since Kelly retired and Leeds fans would love one of their current talents to go on and become a one-club legend.
