Noel Whelan suggested on The Noel Whelan Show on BBC Radio Leeds on Friday evening (broadcast from 6pm, August 12, 2016) that Leeds United midfielder Toumani Diagouraga should be dropped against Birmingham City.

Leeds will return to Championship action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Birmingham at Elland Road.

The West Yorkshire outfit will head into the match on the back of a penalty shootout victory over Fleetwood Town away from home in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Midfielder Diagouraga did not feature in the game against Fleetwood, but he started against Queens Park Rangers in the Championship last weekend. Leeds went down 3-0 to QPR away from home at Loftus Road in London.

Diagouraga, who is 29 years of age, started against Rangers and played for the entire 90 minutes, and former Leeds striker Whelan was not impressed.

“Garry Monk has a real problem there because, for me, Diagouraga hardly did anything,” Whelan said on The Noel Whelan Show on BBC Radio Leeds on Friday evening (broadcast from 6pm, August 12, 2016) while discussing the central midfield positions for Leeds against Birmingham.

“I don’t know what he was actually doing in the first game. He was far too deep on the centre-halves’ toes. He wasn’t doing anything in the game, you know, committing forward. The midfield players were getting far too much time to turn on the ball and pick out passes.

“So he (Leeds head coach Monk) has got a real dilemma here on who to pick because (Ronaldo) Vieira and (Kalvin) Phillips - bundles of energy, very physical as well, they like a challenge.

“Diagouraga, for me, he is the one that I would be questioning whether he is the right man for that job.”

Diagouraga did not have a great game against QPR, as the Opta Stats table below shows, but he remains an important player for Leeds.

The West Yorkshire outfit, who have not featured in the Premier League since 2004, are aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship this season.
