With Benteke drawing attention from a number of clubs, what alternatives are there for Crystal Palace should they miss out on the Belgian?
As the new season creeps closer, transfer rumours begin to fly. Christian Benteke has been linked with a number of clubs in the last few days as Liverpool look to recoup the majority of the £32.5 million they spent to take the Belgian away from Aston Villa.
Crystal Palace were initially linked with the striker, however, West Brom are said to have expressed their interest in the forward. With a two-way battle for the striker seeming likely, who would Crystal Palace be better off signing should they miss out on Benteke?
Chelsea's Loic Remy
The French striker has become a misfit in the Chelsea side since his move from QPR. The forward has scored just eight goals in 32 appearances for Chelsea, but has found it incredibly difficult to impose himself with Diego Costa first choice to start up-front.
Remy is a very pacey striker who is strong in the air and capable of finishing competently. Where Remy has struggled is against better opposition. The Frenchman has been good in the Premier League against lesser teams, especially when he is brought on late in a game to use his pace against tiring opposition. However, when Chelsea have needed him to step up and start a game against top opposition domestically and abroad, he has struggled.
Remy's pace and finishing ability would suit Crystal Palace well and he did, in fact, work under Alan Pardew while at Newcastle where he scored 14 goals in 26 games when on loan. Perhaps it is time for Remy to be reunited with his former manager?
CSKA Moscow's Seydou Doumbia
Doumbia spent last season on loan in the Premier League with relegated Newcastle, however, he failed to impose himself, making only three appearances and failing to score.
Blessed with scintillating pace and an eye for goal, Doumbia scored 61 goals in 95 appearances for CSKA Moscow between 2010-15, the Ivory Coast International was in top form. Since his move away from Russia, however, he has struggled to impose himself in the more competitive leagues. Currently on loan at Basel, Doumbia has two goals in two games and seems to have found his form once again.
Doumbia would command a large fee and he has already found it difficult in the Premier League, however, with goals difficult to come by for Crystal Palace, the club might not be able to be picky.
Sunderland's Jermain Defoe before the match
One of the most talented strikers in the Premier League. Defoe was incredible last season having a huge hand in Sunderland’s escape from relegation. The forward signed from Toronto FC, where he appeared 19 times and scored 11 goals. Even with such a good goal record for the American side, many claimed Defoe was passed his best, and would struggle to play in the Premier League again after playing in a league of lower quality.
Defoe, however, has come back stronger and guided a Sunderland side that seemed destined for relegation to another season in the Premier League. The 33-year-old has scored 19 goals in 49 appearances and has not looked off the pace at all.
Defoe is a deadly finisher and has an ability to be in the right place at the right time. As adept at scoring long range goals as he is at scoring tap-ins, the striker is a nightmare to deal with for any defender.
