Why reported changed Nkoudou offer would be outstanding coup for Tottenham

Spurs haven't given up on their pursuit of Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.

Recent reports, by the likes of France Football, have suggested that Tottenham now want to take Georges-Kevin Nkoudou on loan with a view to a permanent deal – and this could well prove to be a masterstroke.

The drawn out transfer appeared to have collapsed recently, with the Guardian citing Daniel Levy’s negotiating tactics as the primary reason, but there now looks to be a glimmer of hope that Spurs will still get their man.

A loan-to-buy deal would ensure Tottenham avoid suffering another Clinton Njie scenario and would give them the chance to assess the 21-year old after a full season in England before committing to a purchase.

Njie arrived at Spurs last summer, after an excellent year in France, but failed to make any impact whatsoever in an injury hit campaign and is expected to join Marseille as part of the deal – if it indeed does go ahead.

Sealing a loan switch for Nkoudou would avoid this scenario and makes perfect sense for Spurs, if a little less for Marseille.

The French club would undoubtedly prefer a straight-up cash deal, giving them the opportunity to put the funds towards further reinforcements.

Yet, the deal isn’t a terrible one for Marseille – especially if they get to welcome Njie into the fold. The Cameroonian knows Ligue 1, is fully fit after a tough pre-season with Spurs and is a like-for-like replacement for Nkoudou.

If the latter succeeds at Spurs, they will receive the quoted 13 million euros next summer and will not have to contend with an unhappy player on their books all season.

Daniel Levy’s demands may well derail this deal, but if he can pull it off, it could be amongst his finest as Tottenham’s chairman.
