Sunderland completed the double signing of young Manchester United defenders Paddy McNair and Donald Love on Thursday, for a combined fee reported by the club website as being £5.5 million, and Black Cats manager David Moyes revealed his delight at bringing in the duo from his old club.

The 53-year-old emphasised that he was urging the club to pursue international players who offer both short and long-term value, and that the two 21-year-olds fit right into that mould.

“Paddy is a young, athletic player who is improving all the time," Moyes told the Sunderland website. "He has experience for Northern Ireland and we want to bring as many international players to the club as we can.

“Donald comes highly recommended and is another young player who I hope can develop and improve here.

“I want to add some young players to the squad as well as some senior players and both of them have got really good potential and the opportunity to improve.

"I want to bring in players who are here for the long-term as well as the short and hopefully these two are here for the long-term.”

Northern Ireland international McNair made significant appearances under former Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal, and featured in his country's European Championship adventure in France this summer. Sky Sports are reporting that the versatile 21-year-old has been signed with the aim of featuring in central midfield for the Black Cats.

Scotland Under-21 fullback Donald Love has signed for his compatriot Moyes having spent a number of years at the Manchester United academy.

Moyes is reportedly chasing at least one other Manchester United player, with winger Adnan Januzaj also said to be close to making the move to the Stadium of Light according to the Mail.

The talented Belgium international is allegedly set to sign on loan despite wanting to leave United on a permanent deal.
