The Dutchman arrived at Anfield in a big money move from Newcastle United this summer.
Wijnaldum is one of seven summer signings Anfield after a big money move from Newcastle United as manager Jurgen Klopp has overhauled his squad.
He arrives after an impressive season for the Magpies last season in which he finished as their top goalscorer with 11 goals in the Premier League.
He faces a fight to get into the Reds line up though, with the current squad well stocked when it comes to central midfield players.
And Carragher has questioned where he will fit in if Liverpool do not play a particular system.
“I like Wijnaldum but I’m not quite sure where his best position is or where he will fit in,” he told Sky Sports.
“It looks like he will play tucked in on the left if Liverpool play a three-man central midfield – but if they don’t play that way then I struggle to see where he will fit in.”
It remains to be seen what role Wijnaldum has to play in Liverpool’s team next season.
Given the lofty price they have paid for his services, it is hard to imagine that he will not be a regular starter across the campaign.
It is an intriguing problem for Klopp to find a solution to, and it will be interesting to see how his side line up when they open the season against Arsenal this weekend.
