Ian Holloway has told Sky Sports that he expects Aston Villa to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday when Rotherham United visit Villa Park.

Roberto Di Matteo's side have endured a miserable last five days; first by losing 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday courtesy of a late Fernando Forestieri goal, before going down 3-1 at Luton Town in a first-round League Cup outing on Wednesday night.

Aston Villa's second-half performance against Luton was particularly worrying and not unlike the type of capitulations which saw them finish rock bottom of the Premier League under Tim Sherwood and later Remi Garde last season.

The club has managed three league victories in all competitions this calendar year and Holloway has called on the players to repay their "brilliant" supporters by putting an end to their horrendous form in 2016.

"I was among the Villa travelling support at Sheffield Wednesday and they were brilliant. The players now need to start playing like the fans would if given the chance," he told Sky Sports.

"But it's going to be really tough to turn that losing mentality around.

"They are so fragile at the moment and when they concede a goal, they go to pieces. They need to stand up and be counted, and it needs to start against Rotherham."

Aston Villa need a big showing from Ross McCormack on Saturday. Their £11 million signing this summer drew a blank against the Owls, and was withdrawn at half-time in the defeat by Luton.

Still, he is a tried-and-tested hitman and it should not be long before he justifies his transfer fee.
