The 31-year-old right-back was brought on at half-time of Wednesday night's EFL Cup clash at Kenilworth Road but proceeded to produce a lacklustre performance as Roberto Di Matteo's side fell to a 3-1 defeat.
Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo made seven changes to the side that lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday in Sunday’s Championship opener, and his new-look team initially appeared to be on their way to a straightforward victory after Jordan Ayew took advantage of some questionable defending following a Ross McCormack corner to slot home the 13th-minute opener.
Luton were level by the 35th-minute, however, when former Crystal Palace youngster Jake Gray finished off a well-worked team move to begin the visitors’ dramatic collapse.
Fellow midfielder Cameron McGeehan then gave the Hatters a shock lead eight minutes after the break with a close-range finish, before Jores Okore compounded a miserable night for Villa when he sliced an attempted clearance into his own net in the 66th-minute.
Di Matteo’s men did hit the woodwork three times over the course of the match, but the defeat could have been even worse but for some last-ditch defending.
With fans understandably frustrated and angry about result, few players escaped criticism on the night, but nobody seemingly received quite as much backlash as Alan Hutton.
The Scottish right-back only began the game on the bench after starting Sunday’s loss at Wednesday, but his display following his half-time introduction for the injured Nathan Baker was so uninspiring and mistaken-ridden that supporters on Twitter were calling on the club to cancel his contract.
Here’s how some of them reacted to his 45-minute performance…
Can we all agree that the idea of Hutton being a player of any value to #avfc is now void? Sell or release him & certainly don't play him— Matthew S. Turvey (@matthewsturvey) August 10, 2016
Hutton must be like Messi is training. He should be nowhere NEAR the squad! Absolute garbage! #avfc— Andy Fox (@AndyFoxUK) August 10, 2016
My god... Hutton is the worst player I've ever seen #avfc— Matt Foreman (@MattForeman1) August 10, 2016
I like Hutton and think some of the stick he gets is unfair but I'm starting to see why other fans aren't so keen... #avfc— Steve H (@hartyavfc) August 10, 2016
Can anyone tell me what the point of Alan Hutton is? He can't cross, he dives in early, his positioning is woeful... #avfc— Alex Middleton (@alexYYC) August 10, 2016
Hutton can't pass or cross has no pace can't defend constantly out of position. Can't believe we persist with him #avfc— Paul Jeary (@pjeary) August 10, 2016
Did Alan Hutton win an x-factor type show to get a gig with us? I missed it. #avfc— Silver Fox (@silver_fox24) August 10, 2016
Someone needs to put Hutton directly into the sea. Sharpish #avfc— Mikey Scrivens (@MikeyScrivens) August 10, 2016
Villa will never improve whilst Hutton is playing for us!! Does he ever complete a pass to a villa player #avfc— James Grady (@iamGrades10) August 10, 2016
To call Alan Hutton a liability would be far too kind #avfc— Richard J Mortimer (@rich_mortavfc) August 10, 2016
#avfc look into when Alan Hutton last won a game with Aston Villa and then you'll realise why he needs to go tonight— villarich (@villarich1982) August 10, 2016
I take back anything good I've ever said about Hutton. If we can sell him for glue right now we'd be lucky. #AVFC— The Matt Villan (@dvtavfc) August 10, 2016
Imagine paying Alan Hutton to play football for a living #avfc— Fran (@Goobledygook29) August 10, 2016
I'd say sell Hutton but who the hell would give money for him #avfc— #LivingWithLucien (@Luciennnn) August 10, 2016
As long as Alan Hutton is in the squad, we can't really hope for much. #avfc— Tony Symonds (@tonysymonds) August 10, 2016
At least everyone now hates Alan Hutton as much as I have for the last 4 years. Pathetic excuse of a footballer. #avfc— Alex Berwick (@Alex_Berwick) August 10, 2016
Main focus should be getting a new RB can't stand watching Alan Hutton in a Villa shirt any longer! #AVFC— VILLA ONLY (@VillaOnly) August 10, 2016
Is it all a big joke and Alan Hutton actually won a competition to become a professional footballer?? #AVFC— The Villa View (@TheVillaView_) August 10, 2016
If he plays Hutton on Saturday im going straight back home again. Absolute waste of space #avfc— Claire Bennett (@FloppyChicken92) August 10, 2016
Alan Hutton has no talent bar being lazy and out of position #avfc— Conor (@conordiines) August 10, 2016
Alan Hutton is truly awful. Anyone who rates him should seriously go get help. #avfc— Jordan (@JustJordanFM) August 10, 2016
In the last two years I've watched every single villa game. I don't think I've ever seen a worse opponent right back then Hutton. #avfc— Just Villa (@Holte_AVFC) August 10, 2016
Hutton had a good start to the season two seasons ago, got his new deal and hasn't performed since then #avfc— ~ (@ahwesty) August 10, 2016
