Paul Mitchell was reportedly watching the Uefa Super Cup between Real Madrid and Sevilla on Tuesday when news broke of his resignation.
UEFA Super Cup 2016 - Real Madrid vs Sevilla
Tottenham Hotspur Head of Recruitment Paul Mitchell was reportedly in Trondheim to watch Champions League winners Real Madrid take on perennial Europa League champs Sevilla on Tuesday night, according to Sky Sports, as news of his departure from the North Londoners reverberated throughout the British press.
Despite his time at White Hart Lane seemingly coming to an end, Mitchell seemed to be committed to finding another talent for Spurs to bring in before his departure, as he watched the two Spanish giants fight it out.
Real ended up winning a dramatic match in extra time with fullback Dani Carvajal scoring the odd goal in five in the 119th minute to avoid penalties.
Reported Spurs summer target Franco Vasquez was one of the players on the scoresheet for Sevilla in his first game since moving from Palermo, and below we look at three other players Mitchell may have been checking out as his parting gift to Daniel Levy, Mauricio Pochettino and the Spurs supporters:
Tottenham's Sandro and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk's Yevhen Konoplyanka (L) in action in 2014
The former Dnipro star was closely linked with Spurs before signing for Sevilla last summer, and the 26-year-old certainly impressed in La Liga - especially early in the season. He found the net within five minutes of coming off the bench in the second half in Norway, converting a penalty to put his side back in front, only for Sergio Ramos to score a dramatic late equaliser to take the match into extra time. Tottenham don't have the best of histories with players from the Ukraine, but with the club still looking for a player who can play on the wing and in attacking midfield, Konoplyanka would certainly be a strong addition.
Real Madrid's Marco Asensio in action with Chelsea's Bertrand Traore
The 20-year-old is one of Real Madrid's most promising players having impressed in recent loan spells at Mallorca and Espanyol despite his young age. He is being chased by a host of clubs across Spain and Europe on loan after the attacking midfielder made his debut for Spain in May. If anything, Asensio may fancy a crack at the Real first team squad after scoring a superb goal from range on his Los Blancos debut against Sevilla to open the scoring. But Mitchell would have certainly have noted his quality, if he wasn't already aware of it, and could urge the Londoners to make an approach.
Argentina's Lionel Messi in action against Mateo Kovacic of Croatia
Another player who has been linked to Spurs in the past, Tottenham have been unable to find a central midfielder who can also play in a more advanced position to support the likes of Mousa Dembele and Delle Alli, and Kovacic would certainly offer that quality. The 22-year-old is reportedly available after struggling to win a starting spot in Madrid, and the Mail suggested he has already been offered to Premier League clubs this summer, although sadly, not at a discounted price.
