Stan Collymore has taken to Twitter to blast Aston Villa’s defending in the EFL Cup defeat to Luton Town.

The Villans travelled to Kenilworth Road on Wednesday looking to bounce back from the disappointing loss to Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Things got off to a good start too as Jordan Ayew put them into the lead with just 13 minutes of the game gone.

They could only hold their lead for 20 minutes though as slack defending from Jordan Amavi allowed Pelly Ruddock to set up Jake Gray.

Things got worse in the second half as more bad defending allowed Cameron McGeehan to fire the home side into the lead before a Jores Okore own goal saw them add a third.

The game ended in a 3-1 defeat and reacting on Twitter, Collymore was not impressed by the quality of their defending.

"Villa's defending is a f*****g embarrassment. Lets not mess around now, get rid of the deadwood and add more Elphick's," he wrote on Twitter.

It now remains to be seen if Roberto di Matteo will look to solve the problem with further signings before the end of the transfer window.

The defence was clearly a major issue last year and that does appear to have been solved based on this display.

The question is whether they could find players of the quality they need, with many unlikely to be tempted to make the move to Villa Park at this moment in time.
