Having arrived from Southampton just two years ago, Tottenham's Head of Recruitment is eager to step down.
General view of Tottenham's new training ground
Daniel Levy explained that Mitchell is eager to leave his role, but has made it clear that he will not step down until a time mutually agreed in the future, also emphasising that Mitchell is fully focussed on the rest of the transfer window.
Mitchell himself confirmed this as part of the club's response to the earlier reports in the media.
Paul Mitchell: "I’ve greatly enjoyed my time at #THFC & it’ll continue to be my sole focus until such time as I move on to new challenges."— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 9, 2016
It is a surprising and disappointing turn of events for the Londoners as they finally looked to have put together a settled management team at the club.
Mitchell was credited with having a hugely positive influence on Southampton's recruitment after moving from MK Dons in 2012. He played a part in a number of successful signings as the Saints proved themselves to be an excellent Premier League side.
The former defender went on to follow Mauricio Pochettino to White Hart Lane in 2014 after the Argentine switched to Spurs, and has also helped make a series of impressive moves at the Lilywhites.
The Mail report that Mitchell's contract was due to expire in 2017, but that he has taken the option to resign having worked a notice period. While the official Spurs response has suggested he will not be allowed to leave until the end of the transfer window at the very least.
A separate report in the Mirror has suggested Mitchell is eager to take over from Steve Walsh at Leicester, but that Spurs were pushing hard for him staying, even if it was just until his contract expires next year.
Unsurprsingly with the shock news, a number of Spurs fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts on the matter, a selection of which are below:
