It is less than two years since Tottenham lured Southampton head of recruitment Paul Mitchell away from the club to join head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The pair formed a trusted partnership at St Mary's before Pochettino jumped ship to join Spurs, and it was no surprise he looked back to the Saints man to help him take Tottenham forward.

So it came as a big surprise last night when it was confirmed that Mitchell has offered his resignation at Tottenham, with the club and chairman Daniel Levy admitting as such on the team's official website.

The Mirror report Mitchell is tempted to join Leicester City, who have a vacancy after Steve Walsh left the club to become Everton's director of football.

Here is a look at how Southampton fans reacted to the developments, with some suggesting they would be more than happy to have him back at the club...

While clearly a blow to Tottenham, Southampton have continued to buy smartly since his exit, as shown by the signings of Nathan Redmond and Alex McCarthy this summer.

The Saints finished sixth in the Premier League last season and the departure of Ronald Koeman is more likely to be a more significant blow than Mitchell's departure was, yet with their recent record of bouncing back after personnel departures, it would be wise to bet on replacement Claude Puel being a success.
