Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has told Squawka that he thinks Tottenham centre backs Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen were 'outstanding' last season.

After years of defensive problems, Spurs became solid at the back under Mauricio Pochettino, and even ended the season with the Premier League's joint-best defensive record alongside Manchester United.

Whilst full backs Danny Rose and Kyle Walker enjoyed superb seasons, much of Tottenham's stability was down to the central defensive partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Vertonghen had arrived from Ajax back in 2012, and had played with a host of different partners at the back, including Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul, Vlad Chiriches and Federico Fazio, and Pochettino clearly felt that he needed a consistent partner at the back.

Last summer, Pochettino swooped to land somebody Vertonghen knew very well in Alderweireld, The duo had played together at Ajax and with the Belgian national team, and it's clear that they had an almost telepathic understanding last season.

Alderweireld, who cost just £11.4m from Atletico Madrid last summer according to The Guardian, will go down as one of Tottenham's best signings in recent years, and Pochettino will be relying on them both for more impressive performances this season.

Ahead of the new Premier League season, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has spoken to Squawka about what the thinks makes a good defender - and noted that Alderweireld and Vertonghen were 'outstanding' last season.

Carragher, a former defender with Liverpool, hopes to see Vertonghen fully fit having suffered an injury with Belgium at Euro 2016, whilst he also stated that Alderweireld was a 'revelation' last season, and a main reason for their defensive record.

"I think last season, the outstanding ones really were the Tottenham pair," said Carragher. "With Vertonghen, it's whether he's fit now having had a problem in the summer, as he gives you that nice balance on the left hand side. Alderweireld came in from Southampton and was a revelation as well, I think they had one of the best defensive records," he added.

Do you think Alderweireld and Vertonghen are the Premier League's best centre back partnership?
