Paul Pogba signed for Manchester United this week, but would former Arsenal ace Patrick Vieira have been worth just as much.
Paul Pogba clinched his mega move to Manchester United this week in a world record £89 million transfer, leaving Juventus behind after winning four league titles.
The central midfielder is seen as the best player in his position in his generation, but one of his Premier League predecessors would have been worth just as much, former opponent Danny Higginbotham has stated.
In his column for The Sun, the former Stoke defender says ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira would be worth as much as Paul Pogba is today.
He said: "When Vieira was running at you in full stride, you felt like you were on a hiding to nothing. Those runs were so powerful, especially when he built up a head of steam.
"We was ridiculously good, unbelievable. Today, you would be looking at £90million-plus if he was on the market.
Arsenal paid a relative pittance to sign Vieira back in 1996, just £3.5 million to lure AC Milan into a sale.
It was a deal the Italian giants no doubt regret even now, and one of the best bargains in Premier League history.
Arsenal refused to sell Vieira during his time at the club despite big interest until 2005, when he was sold to Juventus for £13.5m.
Had the huge fees that are commanded today been in effect, they could have got a lot more, and at his peak, he could have been a financial game changer for the Gunners off the field as well as through his performances on it.
