While Tottenham Hotspur fans are hoping to see more additions at the club this summer, it is an imminent departure that has been generating headlines in recent hours.

As confirmed by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and reported by the BBC, the club’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell will be leaving in the near future, just two years after his appointment.

Mitchell has helped Tottenham bring in some superb players in recent times, including Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld and more recently Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen, and as a result some Spurs fans are quickly laying the blame at Levy’s door.

After all, the chairman is renowned as a tough negotiator and there are suggestions among the fan base that Mitchell could be moving on after growing frustrated at White Hart Lane.

The protracted pursuit of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, which now appears to be dead in the water, could have also played a part but of course this is simply speculation.

However, whatever the reason for Mitchell’s move, Levy should not be blamed for all the club’s woes and overlooked for all its successes.

After all, the Tottenham supremo was there before Mitchell’s arrival and he will be there afterwards. He has regularly got great deals for departing players and stumped up the cash to bring in some of the best talent in England and further afield.

General View of White Hart Lane

He is not everyone’s cup of tea - and this writer has not always been as fair as they should have been when discussing his work - but as far as chairmen go he is one of the best out there, and his critics would be wise to acknowledge just how much he cares not just about the pennies and the pounds but also the club as a whole.

It is sad to see Mitchell move on but someone will replace him with relative ease. When it ultimately comes to replacing Levy, Tottenham may struggle considerably more.
