The Stoke City midfielder says Everton are doing the right thing by signing Swansea City's Ashley Williams.

Charlie Adam has told talkSPORT that Everton could make the best signing of the summer if they bring Ashley Williams to Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old defender is on the brink of joining Everton according to BBC, who reported that Swansea City accepted a £12 million bid by the Toffees.

If and when he signs, Williams will be John Stones's replacement after the young centre-back, 22, joined Manchester City in a £47.5 million switch on Tuesday.

Williams is an established and experienced central defender who has been a rock for the Swans these past eight years - five of which were in the Premier League - and he is arguably a better, more reliable player than Stones, in the short term anyway.

And Adam believes it's a fine bit of business by Everton boss Ronald Koeman if the deal materialises, the Stoke City midfielder saying it could be one of the best purchases of the summer.

"It's an excellent replacement for Everton. I think it could be one of the best signings of the summer. It's a fresh challenge for him," he told talkSPORT.

"He's been at Swansea a long time and to play under Ronald Koeman is a great move for him."

Everton have also been linked with a move for Sunderland centre-back Lamine Kone, according to ESPN, but that one does not appear to be as far along as Williams's prospective switch.
