Phil Thompson has backed Aguero to emerge as the Premier League's top goalscorer this season.
Manchester City's Aguero scored 24 goals in the Premier League last season
Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports that Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be the main rival to Sergio Aguero for the next season's Premier League Golden Boot, but says he still expects the Argentine to come out on top.
Aguero scored 24 goals in 29 starts for Manchester City last season, finishing just one strike behind the Englishman, who was awarded the accolade for the 2015/16 season
And while Thompson expects Kane to prove a worthy adversary to the 27-year-old in the race for top spot this term, the Liverpool legend is convinced that the former Atletico Madrid star will come out on top.
Previewing the season for Skysports.com, Thompson said: "Kane is once again his main competition but I think this will be Aguero's year to top the charts and I wouldn't be surprised if he hits the 30-goal mark."
Aguero is widely expected to be Manchester City's main goal threat again this season, and will certainly cause a number of headaches for Premier League defenders.
But Thompson admits that the forward will need to stay fit for an entire season if he is going to fulfill his potential for the coming campaign.
He added: "For him to achieve that he obviously needs a full season, which is the main concern, but I think Pep Guardiola will give everybody a lift at Manchester City and get even more out of his star man."
Thompson's colleague Charlie Nicholas has also backed Aguero to claim the Golden Boot, but admits he has his doubts over Manchester United's new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
He added: "I don't see Ibrahimovic scoring bags of goals with the way Jose Mourinho sets up his team so for me it's between Aguero and Kane."
