The Newcastle United starlet could be set for a loan exit.
Newcastle United's Adam Armstrong in action
The 19-year old has been linked with a loan move to Rangers – by the likes of the Scottish Sun – and Benitez admitted last week that he and the player have a difference of opinion over what is best for his progression.
“I will be very honest, we had a Championship team asking to take him on loan, and I think it could be good for him because he is a young player looking to prove himself in our team when we are trying to win every single game will be difficult,” said the Spaniard.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
“I was trying to be honest with him. Adam came to my office and he said: ‘No, I want to try and stay here and for you to give me a chance.’
“I told him: ‘OK, no problem, you will stay here and we’ll decide in two-to-three weeks and see where we are.’ But he knows my opinion, he knows my idea, but we will decide in the coming days because I want to make sure we do the best for him but also for the team,” he added.
Adam Armstrong and Southend United's Ryan Leonard in action
Armstrong was exceptional at Coventry City last season, scoring 20 goals in a fruitful loan spell, and it seems he feels ready to make his mark on Tyneside.
He could yet be overruled by his manager however, and Benitez’s comments will give Rangers hope that a deal could be hashed out.
Rangers manager Mark Warburton
The Gers’ are in the market for striking cover, with the urgency upped after Martyn Waghorn’s recent hamstring injury, and Armstrong ticks all the boxes.
The England Under-19 international would add another dimension to Warburton’s attack and has the potential to wreak havoc in the SPL.
Rangers began their league campaign in disappointing fashion, with a 1-1 draw with Hamilton at Ibrox on Saturday, and will be well aware that they need to strengthen before the close of the window if they are to rival Celtic for the title.
