O'Kane, who has been at Bournemouth since 2012, struggled to hold down a regular place in Eddie Howe's side last season, making only six starts in the Premier League this season with most of his other appearances either coming off the bench or in cup competitions.
The 25-year-old is understood to be open to the idea of a move away from Bournemouth as he is keen to be playing on a regular basis at this stage of his career.
A number of clubs including Aston Villa and Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers have been linked with the defensive midfielder, but Wigan are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by luring him to the DW Stadium.

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is thought to be a fan of O'Kane and sees him as playing a key role for his side in the Championship this season.
