Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has taken to social networking site Twitter to give an update on the club’s transfer situation.

Xia has revealed that Villa are close to signing a midfielder, and that the club hope to get the deal done before Saturday.

The Championship club have signed defender Tommy Elphick from Bournemouth, goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Hellas Verona, midfielder Aaron Tshibola from Reading and striker Ross McCormack from Fulham so far in the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa defender Joe Bennett is reportedly on his way out of the club.

According to The Birmingham Mail, the 26-year-old left-back is close to joining Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent contract.

Villa have been credited with an interest in West Bromwich Albion defender James Chester.

It has been reported by The Mirror that the Villans, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, want to sign the 27-year-old centre-back in the summer transfer window.

It has been reported that the Villa have contacted West Brom and have declared their interest in the Wales international.
