Aston Villa have already allowed seven first-team players to leave the club this summer and it appears as though an eighth could be imminent as it is reported that left-back Joe Bennett will complete a permanent return to Sheffield Wednesday.

Bennett played four times for the Owls during a loan spell at the back end of last season before seeing his time at Hillsborough curtailed by injury.

However, Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal clearly saw enough from the 26-year-old to be convinced that he would be a good permanent addition to his side.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Bennett will complete a move to Hillsborough in the next 24 hours after Roberto di Matteo told the defender that he could find a new club.

That is despite Bennett saying himself just a month ago that he had a point to prove to the new Villa boss as he looked to make the left-back spot his own ahead of Jordan Amavi and Aly Cissokho.

That does not appear to have gone too well for the former Middlesbrough man, who is set to leave Villa Park for Sheffield.

Bennett was left out of the side to face the Owls in Sunday's season-opening defeat, with Cissokho instead being selected to start as Amavi closes in on a return to full match fitness.

Reacting to the report of his impending departure, many Villa fans were more than a little frustrated by the decision as they see Bennett as a player with far more promise than former Liverpool flop Cissokho.
