An injury to centre-back Gabriel has left Arsenal desperate for defensive reinforcements.
Arsenal's Gabriel is the latest defender set to spend a spell on the sidelines
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is determined to push through a move for either Jonny Evans or Shkodran Mustafi before his side's Premier League opener with Liverpool at the weekend, The Mirror has reported.
The Brazilian is set to join Per Mertesacker on the sidelines with suspected ankle ligament damage, although the extent of his injury will be fully assessed on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, boss Wenger is reportedly expecting him to be unavailable for the opening game with Liverpool, leaving him in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.
Mustafi looks set to leave his current club Valencia, who have reportedly already begun their search for a replacement this summer.
The German international, who is understood to be keen on a move to the Emirates, has a £42 million buyout clause but could be allowed to leave the Mestalla for around £25 million.
Like Mustafi, West Bromwich Albion's Evans has also been linked with a move to North London, and is still thought to be a potential option for Wenger, who would have to part with around £15 million to seal the Northern Ireland international's signature.
Whoever Arsenal go for, they will desperate to ensure that a move is completed before the weekend.
