TalkSport have reported via Foot Mercato that Saint-Etienne are speaking with Aston Villa over signing Jordan Veretout this month.

The 23-year-old was left out of the Aston Villa squad for Sunday's 1-0 Championship defeat by Sheffield Wednesday.

The midfielder - an £8 million signing by Tim Sherwood last summer - has been linked with a switch to Marseille for much of this transfer window.

However, TalkSport have claimed via Foot Mercato that another Ligue 1 side in Saint-Etienne have opened negotiations with the Villans over signing him.

The report goes on to state that Real Betis would be keen on signing him permanently, whereas the French side only want him on loan.

If true, Villa might prefer to see him head for Spain. With 23 days left in the transfer window, a transfer fee would give manager Roberto Di Matteo - who has signed four players this summer, but only one attacker - a bit more more money to improve the squad in the final weeks of the window.
