Raith Rovers manager Gary Locke has told the club's website that he is really pleased to see young defender David Bates join Rangers on loan.

Bates, 19, has been coming up through the ranks with his hometown club Raith in recent years, making 15 appearances for the club whilst also spending time out on loan with East Stirlingshire and Brechin City.

The central defender still has one year left on his contract with Raith, and is highly rated having won the club's Young Player of the Year award for last season.

Now, in an intriguing deal, Bates has joined Rangers on a six-month loan deal, with midfielder Jordan Thompson going in the opposite direction to the Scottish Championship side.

Bates will start in Rangers' development squad, but with the club looking for defensive help, he may well have a chance to impress manager Mark Warburton and earn a quick promotion to the first team.

The Scottish Sun even claim that, whilst the deal is a six-month loan initially, Bates will have the chance to make the move permanent in January, with Rangers looking to sign and develop some of the top young talent in Scottish football under Warburton.

After sealing the deal late last week, Raith Rovers boss Gary Locke admitted to the club's official website that he's really pleased to see Bates get the chance to make a big move to Ibrox, as he will have the opportunity to prove just how good he really is.

Locke added that he will be getting reports from Rangers boss Warburton and assistant manager David Weir regarding Bates' progress and development after the two clubs struck a loan exchange deal.

"I’m really pleased that young David is getting this opportunity," said Locke. "It’s his big chance to prove how good he can be, and I will be getting reports from Mark and David on how he is performing," he added.
