According to reports from German newspaper BILD, North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are involved in a head to head battle to secure the services of Red Bull Leipzig defender Lukas Klostermann.

Following the long term injury suffered by Per Mertesacker during pre-season, Arsenal were in the market to sign a new centre back and the Gunners’ need to recruit a defender has been further heightened after Gabriel also endured an injury setback recently.

As it stands, the young duo of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers look likely to be starting in central defence for Arsenal in their Premier League opener against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium and fans are getting a bit worried regarding that prospect.

Manager Arsene Wenger admitted following Gabriel’s injury that he will be looking to dip into the transfer market to acquire a defender and now according to reports from BILD, the Frenchman has identified German youngster Klostermann as a target.

Klostermann is currently plying his trade at Red Bull Leipzig and he had a crucial role to play in helping the club earn promotion into the Bundesliga last season.

At 20, Klostermann is touted to have a huge future and the report states that Arsenal will have to stave off competition from fierce rivals Tottenham in order to sign the young defender.

While Klostermann is certainly very talented, Arsenal require a more experienced defender at the moment and perhaps the German under-23 international will be better served joining Tottenham instead.
