Liverpool lost heavily to the German side this weekend.
Liverpool’s finished their pre-season preparations with a disappointing 4-0 defeat against German side Mainz on Sunday.
Just 24 hours earlier a Reds side had run riot against Barcelona, winning by the same score line, but this time it was Jurgen Klopp’s men who were embarrassed although it should be noted that it was understandably a much changed side.
One of the players in action was summer signing Joel Matip, who made his first appearance since suffering an injury against Wigan Athletic last month. And while the Cameroon international struggled to make much impact on the match and keep the score line respectable he was lacking match fitness and playing alongside some inexperienced teammates.
Ultimately big things are expected of Matip, who not only keeps goals out at one end but is also adept at scoring them at the opposite end.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Liverpool fans thought of Matip’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Loads jumping at the chance to bash Matip. First game back after injury with a load reserve players around him, give him a chance ffs— Smokey (@RedWayYNWA_) August 7, 2016
Matip only back from injury was put next to wisdom and its a friendly he's our best cb and will 100% start against arsenal— conor mcgregor (@adamgottalent) August 7, 2016
Expect a lot more from Joel Matip when the League starts #LFC— Jason Voorhees (@1upp2ner) August 7, 2016
Matip is obviously rusty. Gonna take him some time to settle in but we have Klaven to cover that side for the time being. Been immense— ️ (@TooMuchMane) August 7, 2016
Matip has been terrible today.— lfctopic (@lfctopic) August 7, 2016
Go easy on Matip he's basically playing both centre back positions due to Wisdom's terrible positioning— The_Lil_Magician (@Lil_Magician10) August 7, 2016
Joel Matip is terrible— Wijngums (@FirminoIsGod) August 7, 2016
Matip clearly isn't fit. I'd be tempted to start Klavan ahead of him next week.— The Hybrid (@GLENJOHNSONPOOL) August 7, 2016
