Sunderland fans have taken to social networking site Twitter in order to comment on newly-appointed manager David Moyes’ first signing, former Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji.
The Senegal international defender only arrived at the Blues 12 months ago, yet a struggle to break into the first-team has seen him trade Stamford Bridge for the North East for a reported £8 million fee (the BBC).
Sunderland have endured a testing pre-season ahead of their Premier League campaign, with popular manager Sam Allardyce leaving the club to take over the vacant England job last month.
The Black Cats were extremely quick in naming former Everton manager Moyes as his successor, yet changes to the playing squad have been at a minimum with Djilobodji becoming his first signing.
The strong defender was a surprise signing for Chelsea last term, and it soon became apparent that he was going to struggle to break in to the starting XI under then-boss Jose Mourinho.
Even after the Portuguese coach was dismissed, Djilobdji still found himself out of the picture and he ultimately spent the second half of last season on loan at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.
There is no doubt that there is a good player in there somewhere, and Moyes will be hoping he can add to the defensive ranks at Sunderland and forge a strong understanding with Lamine Kone.
A watertight defence could be the difference between a safe mid-table position and another struggle this season for the Wearside club, with supporters understanding the importance of keeping clean sheets.
Taking to social networking site Twitter amid confirmation of the deal, Sunderland fans have mostly reacted positively to the signing despite question marks over the fee paid for his services.
I'm certain #safc are going to play 3 at the back. Kone, Djilobodji and Kaboul with PvA and a new RB as wing backs.— Ian Tomlinson (@IanTom007) August 5, 2016

Don't know where Djilobodji will fit in the team as Kaboul and Kone will not be dropped. #safc— Jordan Ramsey (@Ramos99FTM) August 5, 2016
