Southampton's new manager Claude Puel has told The Telegraph that he thinks Nathan Redmond could become a striker for the club.

Following Ronald Koeman's move to Everton, Southampton swooped to appoint Frenchman Puel as their new manager earlier this summer, after he took Nice to fourth place in Ligue 1 last season - just two points behind second placed Lyon.

Puel may not be a household name, but he's an experienced manager who will be called upon to stabilise the Saints after the departures of manager Koeman as well as Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane.

Ahead of the new season, Puel has spoken to The Telegraph, and talked about how he played a part in the development of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Henry may have made his name with Arsenal, but he worked alongside Puel at Monaco, and the new Saints manager has admitted that he converted Henry from a winger into a striker, teaching him the finishing qualities that Henry became famous for in North London.

"I trained him as an assistant manager and I worked with him about the possibility to shoot," said Puel. "At the beginning of his career he played as a left-winger and when he made a dribble inside he would shoot wide or long. It was difficult for him to place the ball in the goal. We worked on the possibilities to dribble inside with a mannequin and, after, to work to shoot with curl inside the far post every time. He worked with this and scored a lot of goals. It became a speciality."

Henry hit 228 goals in 376 games for Arsenal, becoming a world star in the process, and part of that was down to Puel's coaching - and he may have similar ideas for a Southampton player.

The Saints snapped up winger Nathan Redmond from Norwich City earlier this summer, and whilst he's been a winger throughout his career, Puel admitted that he sees him as a striker.

"He played always wide but I think he is a very good striker," said Puel, hinting that Redmond may switch position this season.

Expecting Redmond to replicate Henry's goal record may be ambitious, but he could provide the pace that Henry brought to the Arsenal side - and if Redmond can work on his finishing under Puel, Southampton may well have a real threat in attack this season.
