New Aston Villa signing Ross McCormack has told the Daily Mail that he understands why no Premier League club moved to sign him. The striker completed a move to Villa Park on Thursday, with manager Roberto di Matteo paying £14 million to secure him from Fulham.

The Villans had made a late bid for the Scotland international after Norwich City had appeared to be his next destination.

Aston Villa will be hoping that McCormack can score the goals that can help them make an immediate return to the Premier League next season.

It's interesting that no Premier League club thought he was worth a £14m punt, despite McCormack's 66 Championship goals in the last three seasons, but the striker says he can understand why.

“I can understand why Premier League clubs’ position” he told the Daily Mail.

“They are not going to go and pay a lot of money for a 29-year-old who has never played in the Premier League. I believe I can do a job in that league, but ultimately that’s with Aston Villa now – hopefully.”

McCormack will now be hoping that he can score the goals to help Villa seal a return to the top flight this season. And he has every motivation to do well, with Aston Villa arguably representing his best chance of Premier League football in the future.
