The midfielder is one of two new signings at Everton to arrive at this summer after completing a £7.2 million move Aston Villa earlier this week.
He was handed his debut on Saturday afternoon as the Blues took on Espanyol at Goodison Park.
Everton's Idrissa Gueye in action
It did not prove to be a happy start to life on Merseyside however, as he conceded a penalty inside the first 10 minutes.
That goal proved to be the difference between the two sides as Everton ended their preseason schedule with a defeat.
Some fans were disappointed by his display, but Koeman insisted that he was pleased by what he saw.
“I thought Idrissa’s performance was positive,” he told the club’s official website.
“He took too much of a risk in the action that led to the penalty - but he stole a lot of balls in the midfield, he’s fast and he presses well. I thought his debut was impressive.”
Everton's Ross Barkley misses a penalty
It now remains to be seen what role Gueye has to play in the Everton team this season.
The Blues midfield was often disappointing last year with James McCarthy in particular struggling to find his best form throughout the campaign.
Gueye however, posted impressive stats for Villa despite their relegation from the Premier League and it would not be surprising to see him starting the opening game against Tottenham Hotspur next week.
