The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from the Championship club this summer.
The 26-year-old has wanted to leave the club this summer following their relegation from the Premier League, the Shields Gazette claims. And with clubs like Juventus and Real Madrid monitoring his situation, it seemed possible that the Magpies would receive a bid which reached their £35m valuation.
However, Benitez has confirmed that his omission from the game against Fulham was not down to speculation surrounding his future, but rather the fact that he has only just returned to the club following the European Championships, and thus, he may make his first appearance of the campaign in next weekend's clash with Huddersfield.
"Moussa was not match fit, because he came on Monday," he told the Shields Gazette.
"We don't have to sell him. Sissoko will be better next weekend, he will train tomorrow and during the week. We will see how he is."
While Newcastle were perhaps unlucky with some of the decisions that went against them during their 1-0 defeat to Fulham on Friday, there is no question that their performance was underwhelming given what was expected of them this season.
And while there is no guarantee that Sissoko's style will see him dominate the second tier - especially if his desire to leave has an impact on his form - having him in the team will undoubtedly make Benitez's men a stronger side and give them a better chance of getting their first win of the season when they come up against the Terriers.
