Could Liverpool's Mario Balotelli be the answer to West Ham's striker woes?

West Ham United have moved up to second in the list of favourites to sign Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli by bookmaker SkyBet.

The enigmatic Italian has been linked with various clubs over the course of the summer, and with the Hammers need for a forward becoming increasingly urgent, it was only a matter of time before the club and player were linked.

SkyBet price West Ham at 3/1 to win the race for Balotelli's signature, and have Ajax just out in front as favourites at 5/2. There is some question mark, however, around whether Ajax are able to meet the Italian's wage expectations.

While signing the 25-year-old would constitute a huge gamble, West Ham's desperation for a forward could govern who they move for next. So, could that man be Balotelli?

West Ham are heading into the new season with Andy Carroll as their main striker, and with his injury track record, it is a fragile situation for the Hammers.

Balotelli was - and still is - incredibly talented. The question surrounding him has always been, however, around keeping focused and motivated. He just sometimes doesn't seem to want to get involved.

On his day Balotelli is a nightmare to play against. He's aggressive, has explosive pace, and is a wonderful finisher. He just needs to find a way to channel his undoubted talent into something more productive. Taking on Balotelli, however, must be regarded as a gamble.
