Wolverhampton Wanderers have been installed as the new favourites to sign Middlesbrough striker David Nugent, according to Bet Victor.

The popular bookmaker has listed Wolves as big 6/4 favourites to sign the 31-year-old hitman, eclipsing Derby County who were frontrunners for his signature last week.

Bet Victor have now priced Derby as second favourites behind Wolves at 6/1, along with Cardiff City, Newcastle United and Preston.

Newcastle seem unlikely to sign another striker having already recruited £10 million Dwight Gayle to compete with Aleksandar Mitrovic up front for the Magpies.

Wolves, on the other hand, could do with a Championship-hardened striker as they and new owners Fosun International plot Premier League promotion.

The former Leicester City man might be disappointed to leave if he does, having helped them into the Premier League, but the truth is that the top flight has always looked a level above Nugent whenever he has played in it.

He netted five times in 30 top-flight appearances for Leicester during the 2014-15 campaign and Boro boss Aitor Karanka will be aware of his meagre record at the highest level.

According to Soccerbase, Nugent has netted 145 goals in English football to date.
