West Ham United are closing in on the signing of a left-back, according to Slaven Bilic.

Slaven Bilic has told West Ham United’s official website that his side are getting close to bringing in a new left-back.

West Ham are urgently looking for a new left-back, following an injury to Aaron Cresswell.

Cresswell is set to miss the first four months of the season, and West Ham have no other senior players in their squad who are natural on the left hand side of their defence.

Although Bilic has suggested that Sam Byram, Angelo Ogbonna and Havard Nordtveit could fill in at left-back if required, he wants to bring in a specialist in that position soon.

And it appears that the Croatian boss will get his wish, as West Ham are close to agreeing a deal for a new defender.

Bilic said: "We were looking to strengthen our squad in that area, even before Aaron got injured as it was the only position that we didn't have options.

“We were looking to bring someone in to have competition with Cressy. We like to have two good players in every position.

“We are not the only ones looking for a new left back and it is hard to find a good player who we like. With Cressy get inured it has now become a priority and we have a few options there.

“Players like Sam Byram, Angelo Ogbonna and Havard Nordtveit can play there but it is not their natural position. We are close to getting one of the new players.”

West Ham have been linked with a range of targets, but Davide Santon appears to be their top choice.

The Daily Mail have suggested that West Ham are closing in on a deal to sign Santon, and it could be completed soon.
