According to reports from La Lazio Siamo Noi (a subsidiary of Tutto Mercato), the Premier League duo of Southampton and Middlesbrough are battling it out to secure the services of defender Wesley Hoedt.
Having impressed with Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar, Hoedt managed to earn a move to Italian side Lazio at the start of last season and the defender arguably proved to be one of the signings of the season.
Hoedt moved to the Stadio Olimpico on a free transfer and many expected the 22-year-old to be only a backup option to the likes of Stefan De Vrij and Mauricio but as it turned out, he managed establish himself as a regular.
Hoedt made a total of 35 appearances in all competitions throughout the course of the campaign and he is now clearly a first-choice centre-back for Lazio.
Given Hoedt’s exploits, it has been no surprise to see a number of clubs courting his services and now according to reports emerging out of Italy, the Premier League duo of Southampton and Middlesbrough are said to be interested in the Dutchman.
La Lazio Siamo Noi state that Southampton and Middlesbrough are admirers of Hoedt and both English top-flight sides have already enquired about the availability of the young defender.
It remains to be seen as to whether Lazio would be willing to part with Hoedt but there is no doubting that the former AZ star appears to have what it takes to be a great signing for Southampton and Middlesbrough.
