Diame completed a move from Hull City to St James Park on Wednesday, becoming their eighth signing of the summer transfer window.
It is likely he has been brought in as a potential replacement for Moussa Sissoko, who is widely expected to leave the North East this summer after his star performances for France at Euro 2016.

In a Magpies midfield packed with talent already though, there are questions why Benitez has made the move.
But the Spaniard has explained that Diame’s ability to add goals and assists from midfield, as well as Championship experience, are the reasons he has signed him.
"Mohamed is a strong, attack-minded player with a lot of fight and determination to his game,” he told the club’s official website.
"He is also someone who will provide the team with goals and assists from midfield. He has good experience of the Championship and the fight needed to win promotion, which will be important for us."

It will now be interesting to see if Diame is the final arrival at Newcastle United this summer with Benitez certainly not resting on his laurels up to this point.
He has added in almost every position so far leaving him with a relatively large squad ahead of next season.
With several players expected to leave though, that situation could change and it may not be surprising to see more face arrive.
