Former Everton forward Brian McBride has told ESPN that he believes Sunderland boss David Moyes will sign Steven Pienaar this summer.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that the 34-year-old - released by Everton this summer - was training with the Black Cats under Moyes, who signed him for the Toffees in 2008 and then again in 2012.

With the South Africa midfielder being unattached, no transfer fee would be required and McBride belives that the Scottish manager will sign Pienaar for a third time.

"Yeah I think this one will go through. David Moyes knows what type of player Pienaar is," he told ESPN.

"He's a tricky and different player to put into a team if you don't know how to use him, but David Moyes does and I think he'll be good there."

Pienaar was effectively frozen out of Everton set-up under now-axed Roberto Martinez, but the man certainly still has some uses.

Moyes got the best out of him once and Black Cats fans will be hoping he can again, if he indeed joins the Stadium of Light club.

It has been a testing season for Sunderland, who have lost a manager in Sam Allardyce and still not signed any players, but that will need to change. Moyes is a good manager but he'll want to put his own stamp on squad, though he has under a month to do so.
