Matt Ritchie has told the Daily Mail that there is nothing stopping Newcastle United becoming a top club if they return to the Premier League.

The Magpies are set to compete in the Championship next season after suffering relegation from the Premier League time out.

They are expected to dominate in the division though, especially given the work they have done in the summer transfer window so far.

Indeed, the future is looking bright in general now that they have Rafa Benitez in charge for the long term.

And Ritchie says there is nothing stopping Newcastle becoming a top club should they make a return to the top flight this season.

“Everything is going in the right direction now,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Everyone is pulling in one direction and we all know what the club wants to do. If we can get back in the Premier League then there is no reason why we can’t be a top, top club.”

First and foremost Newcastle must focus on getting out of the Championship next season.

They have been made the firm favourites for the title ahead of the season starting and it is difficult to see any sides challenging them at present given the squad they have available.

However, the Championship is a competitive division to say the least, and with several other teams all eyeing those promotion places it is likely to be far from an easy campaign.
