Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan was in action last night playing at Old Trafford for Manchester United for the first time.

The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder was a second half substitute in Wayne Rooney's testimonial against Everton, which ended a 0-0 draw.

Mkhitaryan was deployed on the right wing, one of the many positions he is able to play, but he was not involved as much as he would like, and Jose Mourinho may well reflect after this performance that the Armenian needs to play centrally.

New boys Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also featured, as did Anthony Martial for the first time since Euro 2016.

United's form in pre-season has been mixed, with two wins, one draw and one loss from four games, but the results count for nothing, as Louis van Gaal found out.

The Dutchman won all of his games after being appointed as boss in 2014, and then opened the season with a defeat against Swansea.

Imperfections showing up in pre-season highlight them to the coaching staff to fix them for when it matters, and Mkhitaryan is the key player they want to hit the ground running when the campaign begins.

Here is a look at how United fans reacted to his performance via Twitter...
